Notes by the composer
1-3) Concerto for Piano and Ten Instruments
In three movements
The Concerto was composed in 2008 and is dedicated to Benjamin Lyon.
2) Angels & Watermarks
Angels and Watermarks was composed in 2004 at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, California.
My challenge was to combine the instrument’s rich heritage with a contemporary voice. The result was a suite in which traditional ornaments, gestures and forms mingle with contemporary rhythms and harmonies. Its movements include a prelude, a study in perpetual movement, a lullaby, an homage to the toccata, and a postlude, in which the opening movement is briefly recalled.
The title was inspired by Henry Miller’s short story, in which he continually alters a painting until he discovers what was waiting to be revealed – an angel - which he calls his watermark. I felt it reflected my desire to let the older style shine through my work, not to mention the joy of having little cherubs flying through the music.
3) Dream
Dream was begun in 2003, when I was exploring ways of incorporating tonal harmony into my work. Originally composed as part of a larger work, this version for piano was completed in 2012, and, like Angels & Watermarks, is dedicated to Brenda Tom.
